Sardinia

About Sardinia

Sardinia is a beautiful Italian island that lies in the Mediterranean Sea. Famous for its pristine secluded beaches, food and wine, it is also one of only five blue zones in the world; regions of the world whose inhabitants enjoy record-breaking longevity. Sardinia has a rich and diverse history, which you’ll come to know once you spot any one of the islands nearly 8,000 megalithic stone structures called nuraghi. The nuraghi represent Sardinia’s greatest and most mysterious archeological treasures, found nowhere else in the world. Sardinian cuisine ranges from suckling pig, seafood and wine, to olives, cheeses and breads. Sardinia is home to many different varieties of bread, thanks to the incredible durum wheat found on the island. It is known as the best in all of Italy thanks to the quality of the water and fertile land. Sardinia’s most famous bread, pane carasau is an incredibly thin flatbread. It is an ancient recipe, created for shepherds. The distinctive flavors of Sardinia are derived from various historical influences; from the Phoenicians to the Romans as well as Arabs, Moors, and Spanish as the island was occupied by many Mediterranean powers over the years. Sardinia has treasure of wines to discover. The history of Sardinian wine is a long one. Before Romans spread viticulture throughout their empire, before Greek and Phoenician traders shipped vines to colonies around the Mediterranean, Sardinia’s Bronze Age Nuragic civilization was cultivating local grapes and pressing them into wine. Sardinia's best known red grape, Cannonau is local to the island. Cannonau wines have been associated with longevity and linked to the long lifespan of the Sardinian population which sees many live well into their 90's. Its most famous white grape is Vermentino, a light-skinned wine grape widely planted in Northern Sardinia. Sardinia's most famous liqueur is mirto, a spirit made from the purple fruit of the myrtle bush.
